Frank the Tank

Frank showed up with a guitar case and zero shame.

He walked on stage like he owned the place.

The crowd had no idea what was coming.

I was hosting an open mic near Pittsburgh. It was a big Community Day. Bounce houses, fire trucks, food vendors, and even a magician.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section was due to play on the other stage.

There was a vibe in the air.

We had great sound, a killer drummer, and an acoustic player who could outplay anyone I put him up against.

The crowd was big, happy, and ready.

Then Frank the Tank took the mic.

I won't go into details.

Just know that the young mother with two kids in the front row looked genuinely confused.

One middle aged dude slowly backed away with his beverage.

Frank played like he was auditioning for a band that hadn't formed yet.

No groove.

Wrong decade.

The music just droned on.

But here's the wild thing — the next performer (a singer named Dawn) absolutely crushed it.

She was so good - old timey country, that laid perfectly in the mix with us backing her.

But after Frank, anyone would have looked like Hendrix or Shania Twain .

That's the open mic secret nobody talks about.

Every open mic has a sacrificial lamb.

One brave, oblivious soul who lowers the bar so far that the rest of the night feels like a comeback story.

The crowd forgives everything after Frank.

Nerves disappear. Confidence spikes.

But you do NOT want to be Frank.

You want to be the person who steps up AFTER Frank and makes the whole room go quiet.

That moment — where strangers actually stop talking and just listen — that's what you came back to guitar for.

It doesn't happen by accident. And it doesn't take years.

The FretGrid Method gets you from lost on the fretboard to owning your first real performance in a week.

Ten minutes a day. No rabbit holes. Just results.

Don't be Frank.

Still haunted by the memory,
